Dr. Elma Kay

Dr. Elma Kay is a Belizean conservationist, biologist, and advocate from Progreso Village in northern Belize. She is the first Managing Director of the Belize Maya Forest Trust, which manages the country’s second-largest privately protected area. Previously, she spent over 15 years at the University of Belize, where she co-founded and co-directed the Environmental Research Institute, advancing conservation research and education.

Dr. Kay is passionate about conservation models that unite biodiversity protection with community empowerment. She also champions good governance and human rights as Chairwoman of the Belize Network of NGOs, advocating for equality, environmental justice, and the wellbeing of vulnerable populations.

Through partnerships and alliances, Dr. Kay has helped secure the protection of over 250,000 acres of Belize’s forests, ensuring their preservation for future generations. Above all, she values mentoring young Belizeans and spending time outdoors with her two sons.
